Ashburn colocation pricing
One retail operator in our dataset publishes Ashburn cabinet prices, and those prices make the cleanest case we have that a colocation quote is a price for power with the space thrown in.

The cabinet is free; the kilowatt is not
Psychz Networks lists four full-cabinet configurations in Ashburn, from 1.92 kW to 4.99 kW. Divide each monthly price by its power allocation and the result barely moves: USD 472, 467, 469 and 467 per kW. The 42U of space is the same in every row. What changes is the circuit, and the price follows the circuit almost to the dollar.
Each full cabinet carries a USD 2,250 one-time setup fee; the roughly 2 kW half cabinet at USD 599 has none. Spread over a 12-month term, that fee adds USD 187.50 a month to the 1.92 kW cabinet, about 21% on top of its USD 907 rate. Over 36 months it falls to USD 62.50 a month, which is the practical argument for a longer term when a provider will not waive setup.
Wholesale sits in a different bracket. CBRE's H1 2026 North America report puts Northern Virginia at USD 160–185 per kW per month for blocks of 10 MW and more, midpoint USD 173, up 1.5% year on year. The retail per-kW figure is about 2.7 times that midpoint. The comparison is not like for like: CBRE quotes committed IT load with metered energy billed on top, while the Psychz cabinets bundle unmetered bandwidth. Still, the gap shows what a small buyer pays for not committing to megawatts.

Buying in Ashburn
- Ask for the rate per kW, not per cabinet. Published Ashburn cabinet prices are a per-kW rate with the cabinet attached.
- Treat setup as a term lever. USD 2,250 is a fifth of the first year on the smallest full cabinet and much less on a 36-month contract.
- Above a few hundred kW, ask for a wholesale-style quote. CBRE's range is for 10 MW+ blocks, so smaller requirements will land above it.
- Check the voltage. The 3.33 kW and 4.99 kW cabinets run on 208 V circuits; the 1.92 kW and 2.88 kW options on 120 V.
