1,490 of those facilities state a tier or rating, and 618 show an Uptime Institute award for the constructed building or its operations.

How to read this comparison

Facility count says how much choice a provider can offer you inside one market and how easily you can add a second site with the same contract. Published capacity, in MW, is the operator's own figure where it gives one; many do not, and we never estimate the missing ones, so a blank is not a zero. Certifications are those the operator lists for each facility; a provider can hold a certification at one site and not at the next, which is why the tables count facilities rather than ticking a box per company. An Uptime Tier mark here can mean anything from a design-documents award to an audited building; the data center tiers guide sorts those claims by evidence.

One pattern runs through the data: the providers with the most facilities do not publish prices. None of the ten largest operators by facility count appears among the 37 operators whose rate cards we track on the pricing sheet. Those published cards come mostly from regional and hosting-oriented providers. For a large operator the price is a quote, and the comparison below is how you decide whom to ask.

Three kinds of colocation provider

Interconnection-led operators run many retail facilities per metro, with dense carrier and cloud ecosystems. You pay for the network neighbourhood as much as for the rack, and cross-connect pricing is a major line in the bill.

Wholesale and hyperscale developers build large campuses and lease suites, halls or whole buildings per committed kW. Their facility counts are lower and their published capacities higher; they are the right call once a requirement reaches hundreds of kilowatts.

Regional and hosting providers sell per U, per rack and sometimes per kW, often bundled with bandwidth and IP addresses. They are the ones most likely to publish prices, and the best fit for a few servers or a handful of racks.

What to ask a colocation provider

Power: usable kW per rack (not breaker amps), A+B redundancy, and whether power is all-in or metered, with the rate per kWh.
Density ceiling: the maximum kW per rack the hall can cool, and whether liquid or rear-door cooling is available.
Price per kW: the monthly price divided by usable kW, so quotes from different formats compare.
Cross-connects: monthly and one-time price per connection, and which carriers, exchanges and cloud on-ramps are in the building.
Expansion: a right of first refusal on adjacent space and extra power, and at what price.
Certifications: current Uptime Tier, SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001 or PCI DSS reports for this specific facility.
SLA: what availability is measured on, the credit, and the conditions for claiming it.
Remote hands: included hours, hourly rate, response time, and how tickets are raised.
Commercial terms: setup fees, annual escalation, auto-renewal and notice period.
Availability date: when the space and power are ready, and what happens if that date slips.
