Scala Data Centers, by the numbers
Scala is a Latin American operator built around large buildings rather than many small ones. Most of what it has published is megawatts, and a large share of those megawatts are still being built. Here is what that means if you are buying space or power from it.
What the records say about Scala
Our facility records hold 34 Scala Data Centers sites in 4 countries and 15 cities. Brazil carries the weight of the portfolio with 23 sites, 68% of the total, followed by Chile with 5. Within Brazil the concentration is sharper still: 11 sites are listed in Barueri, the municipality west of São Paulo where the Tamboré campus sits. A buyer looking at Scala is, in most cases, looking at greater São Paulo first and the rest of the region second.
The operator publishes capacity in megawatts, and does so for most of its buildings: 22 of the 34 records carry a published MW figure, adding up to 318.6 MW. That is an average of 14.5 MW per building where a figure exists, which places Scala at the wholesale end of the market, where space is usually leased by the hall and priced per committed kW rather than sold as single cabinets by the month. Floor space is published for 20 sites, 258,351 m² in total.
How much of it exists today
Only 16 of the 34 sites are operational, 47% of the list. 10 are under construction and 8 are announced. The published megawatts tell the same story: 123.1 MW sits in operational buildings, while 195.5 MW is attached to 9 sites that are under construction or announced. The single largest published figure, 48 MW, belongs to a building that is under construction in Lampa.
For a buyer this changes the conversation. Capacity that is under construction is sold on a delivery date, and delivery dates move. If you are negotiating for space in a building that is not yet finished, the contract needs a committed handover date, a credit or an exit if it slips, and a clear statement of which hall and which power feed you will receive. For space in the operational buildings, ask what is actually available now rather than what the campus will hold when every phase is complete.
Certifications: what is listed and what is not
Only 4 of the 34 records list any certification at all. Every tier or rating claim among them is a TIA-942 facility certificate, which means an on-site audit by a certification body licensed by TIA. None of the records lists an Uptime Institute award. That is not evidence that the other buildings are uncertified; it means the certificate has not reached our records, and the request is simple: ask for the TIA-942 certificate of the specific building you are offered, with its rating and date, and remember that a facilities certificate runs three years with surveillance audits in between.
What space costs in Scala’s markets
Scala does not publish a rate card in our data, so there is no Scala price to show. What we can show is the market around it. CBRE’s wholesale asking rents in the 4 markets where Scala has facilities run from USD 160 per kW per month in São Paulo to USD 260 in Querétaro at the midpoint. São Paulo, where 15 of the Scala sites sit, has a midpoint of USD 160. Across all 22 markets in our index, the lowest midpoint is USD 160 in São Paulo and the highest USD 403 in Singapore.
Read those figures as the reference a wholesale quote will be compared against, not as Scala’s price. Asking rents are what landlords quote at the start of a negotiation, for requirements of a given size, before term length, ramp schedule and power commitment are agreed. A quote well above the market midpoint should come with a reason you can name: a scarce power allocation, a short term, an unusual density.
Questions to put to Scala before you sign
- Which building and which hall, and is it operational or still under construction?
- What is the committed delivery date for the space, and what happens if it moves?
- What is the IT load commitment, and how does the ramp work in the first two years?
- Which TIA-942 certificate covers that building, at which rating, and when does it expire?
- How is energy billed on top of the per-kW rent, and on what PUE basis?
- Which carriers are present in the building, and is there a route to the cloud on-ramps in the São Paulo market?
The form below sends your requirement to Scala and to the other operators in the same market, so the quote you get from Scala arrives next to the alternatives.
